650 Burial places near the church of St. Peter and in the area of the 'Storchengasse' indicate that there already was a church here at that time, although the oldest, archeologically identified finds date from the 8th century.

800 Construction of the Carolingian palatinate fortified house at the north-east corner of the 'Lindenhof'. Stones from the former Roman fort building were used to construct this building, whose dimensions were 16 by 40 meters.

 
853 Foundation of the convent ‘Fraumünster’ by Ludwig the Ger-
man, grandson of Charlemagne. The first abbess was Lud-
wig’s daughter Hildegard. The convent ‘Fraumünster’ was endowed with numerous fiefs. One of these fiefs was the valley of Uri, one of the founding cantons of Switzerland in 1291.

874 Consecration of the first church of the convent Fraumünster.

 
885 Foundation of the ‘Grossmünster’ cathedral and the ‘Wasser-
kirche’ church by Charles the Fat. It merely appears to be a legend that they were founded by Charlemagne, whose statue decorates the west tower of the Grossmünster.
