The nobleman Rudolf Brun overthrew the government of Zurich on June 7th. He then established a so called “constitution of the guilds” which became effective as of July 16th.
The craftsmen were reorganised into 13 different guilds and Rudolf Brun appointed him- self mayor of Zurich for life.Up to that point, Zurich’s council consisted only of aristocracts and rich merchants. Under the new constitution, aristocrats and rich merchants formed part of the ‘Society of the Con- staffels’. The seats in the new council were distributed eaqually among the Constaffels and the 13 guilds. The “constitution of the guilds” was amended later and influenced the political organisation of Zurich until 1798.

On the night of February 23rd the council members that were exiled in 1336 returned to Zurich. They tried unsuccessfully to overthrow Rudolf Brun and were defeated by the citizens of Zurich. The butchers of the “Guild Zum Widder” played an important role in this defeat.

On May 1st Zurich joined the Swiss confederation as the 5th canton after Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden and Lucerne (the eternal confederation).

Peace treaty with Emperor Charles IV, who accepted the “constitution of the guilds” and declared Zurich official authority rights over Lake Zurich.

The mayor Rudolf Brun died, possibly poisoned by his opponents.

Battle of Sempach between the Swiss Confederation and the Hapsburgs. Zurich was not involved because it had a special treaty with the Hapsburgs. Pressured by the Swiss Confederation, Zurich renounced this special treaty which un- dermined the Confederation.

1436 - 1446
|
‘Old War of Zurich’ with several skirmishes between Zurich and the other cantons of the Swiss Confederation. On July 22, 1443 there is a battle at ‘St. Jakob at the Sihl’ in the outskirts of Zurich, where the mayor Rudolf Stüssi was killed. Following a 2-year long siege of Zurich by the Confederation, a peace treaty was signed on June 12, 1446.

1476 - 1477
|
War with the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Brave, who attacked Berne. Berne was supported by the Swiss Con- federation and by Rene, Duke of Lorraine. On March , 1476 the Battle at ‘Grandson’ took place. On June 22, 1476 the Battle of ‘Murten’ where Charles the Brave was defeated. Some 2,000 soldiers from Zurich were under the command of Hans Waldmann. In this battle, approx. 20,000 soldiers of the Duke of Burgundy were killed yet only approx. 1,000 soldiers of the Swiss Confederation died. On January 15, 1477, the Battle of Nancy took place where Charles the Brave was killed.

Under pressure of the farmers of the canton Zurich, mayor Hans Waldmann was beheaded on April 5.

|
Swabian war between the Swiss Confederation and emperor Maximilian I. The victory in several battles lead to the theoretical separation of the Confederation from the German Reich, but the separation wasn’t oficially acknowledged until 1648 in the Treaty of Westphalia.

Defeat of the Swiss Confederation at the Battle of Marignago, north of Milan. The heavy losses of the Confederation lead to the end of the expansionist policy of the Swiss Confederation and Zurich.
